St. Joseph’s Health Centre to assume the operation and management of the Manitoulin Lodge

Manitoulin Lodge to become part of St. Joseph’s Health Centre

GORE BAY – Manitoulin Lodge will soon be under new leadership. Beginning July 1, 2025, the long-term care home will be operated by St. Joseph’s Health Centre of Sudbury and will be renamed the St. Joseph’s Lodge of Manitoulin Island.

Manitoulin Lodge is currently owned and operated by Jarlette Health Services, a family operation based in Midland, Ontario. It serves Gore Bay and western Manitoulin Island. St. Joseph’s Health Centre operates two 128-bed long-term care homes in Greater Sudbury (St. Joseph’s Villa in Sudbury and Villa St. Gabriel’s Villa in Chelmsford) as well as St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre, a two-site rehabilitative care hospital.

“We’re thrilled to welcome St. Joseph’s Lodge into the St. Joseph’s family,” says Kari Gervais, CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Centre. “We look forward to building strong relationships with the staff, residents, families, and the wider Gore Bay and Western Manitoulin Island community as we work together to provide high-quality, compassionate care.”

St. Joseph’s Health Centre will retain the staff currently working at the Lodge.

“Our family deeply values the relationship built over the years between Manitoulin Lodge and the broader Manitoulin Island community,” says David Jarlette, owner of Jarlette Health Services. “While we are saddened there will be more distance in that relationship for us, we are very proud of the team members and volunteers who have, for 40 years, made the Lodge a wonderful place for residents to call home. We are, however, very excited for Manitoulin Lodge’s next chapter and what St. Joseph’s Health Centre and redevelopment would mean for future generations of Manitoulin Island residents, including having more options to ‘age in place’ while continuing to receive the high-quality care they deserve near to their home communities.”

"For over two years we have been working to ensure that Western Manitoulin continues to have the benefit of long-term care services, and it is through a partnership with Jarlette Health Services, St. Joseph's Health Centre, the Town of Gore Bay and other interested parties that this will be the case,” says Ron Lane, Mayor of Gore Bay. “I thank David Jarlette, the owner of Jarlette Health Services, for his generous donation of the Lodge property to the Town and also St. Joseph’s Health Centre for agreeing to assume the management of the current Lodge.  The Town, along with other partners, will support St. Joseph’s Health Centre as they work towards securing approvals for the development of

a new long-term care home that will provide care services and jobs for the people of Western Manitoulin for many years to come."

As part of its long-term plans for the Lodge, St. Joseph’s Health Centre is in the process of securing approvals to construct a larger, 64-bed facility, to be located on Armstrong Road in Gore Bay.

“A new St. Joseph’s Lodge would expand both our capacity and amenities, allowing us to enhance the care and quality of life we can offer to our residents,” adds Gervais.
