Mayor Profile

Ron Lane, Mayor of Gore Bay
I was born on Manitoulin Island and that event alone makes me a “Haweater”. The “Haw” tree is native to Manitoulin and is a smaller tree with long thorns and hard red berries. Anyone with the good luck to be born here is automatically called a “Haweater”.
I spent most of my childhood living in Gore Bay and attended elementary and secondary school there. Following secondary school I attended the University of Western Ontario were I received a B.A. and the University of Ottawa were I received a LLB (Law).
My wife Greta and I returned to Gore Bay in 1978 and have lived in Gore Bay or the Gore Bay area continuously since then except for 4 years when my employment required that I live in Sudbury.
During our time in Gore Bay we raised a family of two boys and a girl and I was active in coaching minor sports including hockey and softball.
I have always been interested in volunteer work and for many years I was a member of the Gore Bay Rotary Club and served terms as director, secretary, treasurer and president. One of my most rewarding times as a Rotarian was when the club spearheaded the funding drive for the construction of the Gore Bay Medical Centre.
Both my father John and my uncle Lawrence were past mayors of Gore Bay and this helped fuel my interest in local government. I served as a councillor from 1994 to 2000 and again from 2009-2010. In October 2010 I ran for and was elected Mayor.
My time as a town councillor and mayor has been a rewarding and educational experience. It has provided me with not only a chance to serve my community but as well has allowed me to meet many people from other parts of Canada and around the world.
It is an honour and privilege to be the head of council for our town and I look forward to working with council, our town staff and the citizens of Gore Bay to make this town the best it can be for both residents and visitors alike.
